Ambler, Pa. - Duquersne University's women's soccer team won their fourth straight in Atlantic 10 Conference play Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 blanking of the Temple Owls at the Ambler Soccer Complex. The win increases Duquesne's league mark to 4-1-0; they are 9-2-1 overall. The shutout was Duquesne's fifth of the season.
The Dukes struck first in the 42nd minute of play as freshman midfielder Shannon Rengers (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) sent the ball up the field to senior midfielder Erica Carey (Wilmington, N.C. / J.T. Hoggard). Carey then blasted the ball past Temple goalkeeper Tiffany Kasunich. Carey has 10 points so far this season with four goals and two assists.
Duquesne added an insurance goal with 19:16 to play when freshman Michelle Esposito (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) scored an unassisted goal. Esposito scored the game-winner Friday against Saint Joseph's.
Kasunich registered six saves for the Owls while Duquesne's Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) recorded four. The Dukes out shot the Owls, 14-5. Temple's Kaitlin Gavaghan had two shots on goal. Temple is 1-11-0, 0-4=0 in A-10 action.
Note: Bondi started all five shutouts. Since she was releaved twice, by sophomore
Lindsay O'Connell (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) in the 7-0 Vermont win and by freshman
Lauren Shepard (Allentown, Pa. / Salisbury) in the 2-0 win over Cleveland State, the Ohio native is credited with just three shutouts. She has six in her DU career.
Duquesne, which this past week received votes in the Soccer Buzz college poll for the first time in the program's 11-year history, plays their third of six consecutive Atlantic 10 road games on Friday, October 14th when they take on Massachusetts at 3:00 p.m. in Amhert, Mass.
