Washington, D.C. - Duquesne University's volleyball team returned to their winning ways Sunday afternoon as they topped George Washington, 3-1, at the Smith Center. The game scores were 30-27, 30-27, 25-30, 30-23 in the one-hour, 54-minute match.
The win raises the Dukes' Atlantic 10 record above .500 at 3-2; DU is 11-7 overall. Duquesne has won three of their last four matches, all in Atlantic 10 competition.
GW is now 7-12, 1-5 in league play.
Junior Amanda Haeg paced the Red and Blue with 16 kills and 16 digs. Senior Diana Wuebker and sophomore Kristin Garnett also recorded doube-doubles. Wuebker had 14 kills and 10 digs while Garnett assisted on 56 points and dug out 14 balls on defense.
Sophomore Dana McLaughlin also had 14 kills and senior libero Karisa Decker saved 13 digs.
Game one was competitive and tied at 17-17 before the Dukes got a pair of kills from Lindsay Hess and an attack error by GW to go up 20-17. Duquesne appeared to be cruising at 27-19 but four kills by GW's Lindsey Vernand and a pair from Juliene McLaughlin got the Colonials within two at 29-27 before DU's Dana McLaughlin registered a kill for the game-winner.
Duquesne controlled game two early and out-hit the Colonials, .341 to .154 before more late-game heroics got the Colonials to within 29-26 until a GW attack error gave the deceision to the Dukes.
Game three also was very competitive and tied at 21-21 before three kills by Kelly Kabbes gave the Colonials the lead for good. Duquesne took control early in game four and kept GW at arm's length for most of the game en route to the victory.
Kabbes hit .579 for the match with 12 kills and just one error in 19 swings. GW's Julienne McLaughlin had a game-best 18 kills to go along with 17 digs. Kaiwan Lee had 63 sets and 14 digs.
The Dukes countinue the road portion of their A-10 schedule next Friday, October 14, 2005, when they head to Ohio for a 6:00 p.m. match with the Dayton Flyers (10-9, 4-1).
