Philadelphia, Pa. - Duquesne University's women's soccer team, which this week received votes in the Soccer Buzz college poll for the first time in the program's 11-year history, topped the host Saint Joseph's Hawks, 2-1, Friday night on Finnesey Field. Freshman Michelle Esposito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored the game-winner with less than four minutes to play in regulation.
Duquesne (8-2-1, 3-1 Atlantic 10) took an early lead in the contest. Jumping on top with a goal by another freshman, Shannon Rengers from Mt. Lebanon, in the 20th minute after rocketing home a shot from the left side of the goal. Senior Erika Carey collected the assist for the Dukes.
Saint Joe's (5-6-2. 1-1-1 A-10) knotted the game via Shannon Osborn's goal midway through the second half. Esposito scored the winner when she knocked home a ball in the penalty box that was touched over by sophomore Audra Matthews (Cincinnati, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy).
Junior Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) and SJU's Nicole Dienna each grabbed three saves. Play was fairly even throughout with each team attempting 11 shots, the Dukes targeting one more on goal (5-4).
The Dukes will remain in the City of Brotherly Love for a another conference match with the Temple Owls (1-10-0, 0-3-0) at 1:00 p.m., Sunday October 9, 2005.
