The Duquesne women's volleyball team improved to 12-9 overall, 4-4 in Atlantic 10 action with a 3-1 win over visiting Rhode Island (6-15, 1-7) Friday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Sophomore Lindsay Hess (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry) led the Dukes with 17 kills and six blocks while freshman Laura Kastein (Huntsville, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) posted a team-best 17 digs. Sophomore setter Kristin Garnett (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) recorded a match-best 56 assists. Rhode Island was led by Jillian Bekke's match-high 19 kills and Leslie Wiekamp with a match-best 26 digs.
Duquesne won game one 30-28 after holding an early 11-5 edge. The Rams inched within a 15-17 reach serving for four points, but the Dukes extended their lead to 23-17. URI got within a 28-29 reach before a service error gave DU the victory.
The visitor jumped to a 5-2 lead in game two before the Dukes took a 6-5 edge on four unanswered points. The Rams tied the game at 6-6 before an 11-3 DU run put the host up 14-9. Kastein served for seven points over her rotation to give the Dukes a 28-13 lead, but Rhode Island collected four kills and took advantage of four DU errors to get within a 23-29 reach. Wuebker's kill gave the Dukes the game.
Despite holding a 6-3 edge in game three, the Dukes let the Rams snag a 12-7 edge on a 5-0 run. Rhode Island led 19-15 midway through the contest, but Duquesne inched back to a 19-21 each. URI would commit three hitting errors for a 21-21 game. Rhode Island went on to hold a 27-24 lead before the Dukes got within a 26-27 reach, but it wasn't enough as the Rams nailed three kills to take the 30-26 edge.
The final game saw an 8-8 tie early on and the contest would stay within a one point reach until the Dukes grabbed a 14-11 edge on two Ram errors and a DU ace. It would be anyone's game from there as the contest would not see more than a two-point edge for either team until Duquesne grabbed a 28-25 advantage on a URI net violation. Hess' ace got the Dukes to match point before Amanda Haeg sealed the win with a kill.
The Dukes return to action this Sunday as they host Fordham at 2:00 pm in a "Dig for the Cure" match to benefit the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
