Kingston, R.I. - Duquesne University's women's soccer team was defeated by the host Rhode Island Rams, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex. The Dukes are now 9-4-1, 4-3-0 and in seventh place in the Atlantic 10.
Senior Erica Carey (Wilmington, N.C. / J.T. Hoggard) and sophomore Audra Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy) scored for the Dukes. Sophomore Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) recorded seven saves.
URI quickly opened the scoring when Melanie Kasparek hit a shot over Bondi with just 2:55 gone in the game. Dora Larusdottir and Kasparek's twin sister, Megan, assisted on the score. Megan tallied the next goal in a scramble at DU's goal line with 20:45 on the clock. Melanie completed URI's first half scoring with her second goal off an assist by Kayla Reels.
Duquesne got on the scoreboard at 39:47 when Mathews netted a 25-footer off an assist from freshman Michelle Esposito (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley).
URI again scored early in the next period, when Larusdottir fed Debra Nelson for the first of her two consecutive scores less than 90 seconds into the second half. Nelson concluded URI's scoring with just over 30 minutes left in the game, rebounding her own deflected shot.
Carey scored Duquesne's last goal at 64:46.
Rhode Island, which is now 8-4-1 in second place in league with a perfect 4-0-0 mark, outshot the Dukes 22-14. Ria Carroll amd Kirsten Marra combined to stop eight Duquesne shots on goal.
Duquesne concludes the A-10 regular season in two weeks in Pittsburgh. DU faces La Salle (4-9-2, 1-3-1 A-10 - 10th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28 on Rooney Field. The final pre-championship tournament contest will be against George Washington (4-9-0. 1-4-0 A10 - T11th) on Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 p.m.
