BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Duquesne women's soccer team suffered a 7-3 loss at Bowling Green Friday evening in a mutual season opener at BGSU's Cochrane Field. The game was the nightcap of the first day's action of the Falcon Classic. The contest, originally slated for 4:00 pm, was delayed till 5:52 p.m. The day's first game was suspended for two hours by lightning and a second lightning alert near the rescheduled 5:00 p.m. start further postponed the kick-off.
Four newcomers led the Red & Blue, who return to play Sunday vs. Eastern Michigan at 11:00 am.
The Dukes trailed 3-2 at the half with scores from freshmen Audra Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy) and Faye Rasmussen (Westlake, Ohio / Magnificat). Junior Elizabeth Riggs (Candor, N.Y. / Candor Central), an Akron transfer, assisted on Mathews' marker.
Another frosh, Kelly Reed (South Park, Pa. / South Park), concluded the Dukes' scoring, hitting DU's only goal in the final frame. Sophomore Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) recorded eight saves on 15 shots on goal.
Bowling Green was led by senior Kristy Coppes who netted six of the Falcon's seven goals, setting a school and Mid-American Conference record.
In the Classic's opening match, Eastern Michigan defeeated Pittsburgh by a 2-1 score. Bowling Green and Pitt will meet at 2:p0 pm Sunday in the final Classic contest.
