Duquesne University twelfth-year baseball coach Mike Wilson announced today the signing of two local baseball players to national letters of intent to play for Duquesne in 2006. Brian Bernardo and Brian Schwartzbauer, both of Shaler Area High School, are the newest Dukes.
Bernardo was a 2004 All-Section honoree after leading his team with a .411 batting average while adding eight doubles and 15 RBI. A two-year starter at infield an outfield his 2003 team was section champions and WPIAL runner-up while the 2004 squad made it to the second round of the WPIAL's after placing second in the section.
Schwartzbauer is a two-time All-Section choice and was an All-North selection last year. A middle infielder and pitcher, his American Legion teams reached the Regional Championship three straight years as he posted a 12-0 record on the mound. He is the younger brother of recent Duquesne graduate Dan Schwartzbauer, who is now playing in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
The Dukes finished the 2004 season at 21-28 and made Duquesne's second straight appearance at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
