Four Dukes Named Verizon Academic All-America

Four Duquesne University student-athletes have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District 2 At-Large Team. Junior tennis player Micael Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, PR / Colegio Marista) and senior rower Karen Predmore (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) were named to the first team while sophomore golfer Tom Wears (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy) and junior lacrosse player Becca West (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) were named to the second team. The at-large team comprises the sports of rowing, gymnastics, skiing, men's volleyball, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, golf and rifle.

Micael Lopez-Acevedo


Lopez-Acevedo, who was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Academic Student-Athlete of the Year, boasts a 3.93 cumulative grade point average as a biology major. He posted a 20-8 singles record, primarily at second singles, to help lead the Dukes to a third place finish at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship - their best finish ever. Acevedo was perfect at the Championship with a 3-0 singles mark and was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team for his efforts. He is a member of Duquesne's Dean's List, as well as the school's Director of Athletics' Honor Roll and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Karen Predmore


Predmore, a senior, owns a 3.92 GPA in pharmacy and was also named to the 2003 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team and as its women's rowing Academic Student-Athlete of the Year. She is a member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics' Honor Roll, Phi Eta Sigma, Lambda Sigma and the Integrated Honors Society. Predmore led the Dukes to 2nd place in the Lightweight 8 at the A-10 championships and led the Lightweight 4 to 2nd at the Marietta Regatta. She was also an oarsman for the Lightweight 8, which took third at Head of the Ohio and fifth overall at the Knecht Cup.

Tom Wears


Wears currently holds a 3.82 GPA in liberal arts. A member of the Dean's List, Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Duquesne's Director of Athletics Honor Roll every semester, he was the top finisher and placed 15th overall at the Robert Morris Invitational with a two-day score of 80-76-156. Wears shot in the 70's in eight of his 16 rounds this season, including a career-best 74 versus St. Francis (PA).

Becca West


West was a starter in all 16 games at attack and stood second for the Dukes with 12 assists and fourth with 34 points adding 22 goals. She netted five of her goals in the Dukes' win over Monmouth and posted hat tricks vs. George Washington and Denver. She had two assists in three contests and stood tied for seventh in the Atlantic 10 in assists and 15th in points. West has a 3.77 GPA in pre-med / health management systems and is named on the Dean's List and A-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Pi Kappa Epsilon Health Science Fraternity and is a volunteer at Mercy Hospital's Preferred Choice Hospice of Pittsburgh.

To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve player and carry at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. District 2 encompasses schools from the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The two first team honorees, Lopez-Acevedo and Predmore, will now appear on the ballot for the Verizon National At-Large teams that are slated to be announced in June.

Duquesne University has had 20 student-athletes named to the various District 2 teams this season placing at least one student-athlete on each of the nine (9) Verizon teams to date - men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball, football and men's & women's basketball, baseball, men's at-large, women's at-large. Duquesne's total is the most of any University in District 2.
