Duquesne Falls at Saint Joseph's

Mazzotta supplies brace to lift Hawks

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University men's soccer team continued Atlantic 10 play Saturday, dropping a 2-0 decision in Philadelphia, Pa., to Saint Joseph's at Sean Sweeney Field. The Dukes dipped to 5-2-2 (.667) overall during the 2025 season, including 1-2 (.333) in the Atlantic 10.

POINTS OF EMPHASIS
The Hawks capitalized early, getting a goal from Matteo Mazzotta less than 10 minutes into the contest to grab a 1-0 lead. A throw-in from SJU saw the Dukes clear with a header, but the ball bounced right to Mazzotta at the top of the box, who took one step and unleashed a rocket that found the far left corner of the net and away from a diving Aaron Meono, who earned his first career start at goalkeeper for Duquesne.

ADDING ANOTHER
Mazzotta was at it again in the second half for the Hawks, picking up the brace to help secure the victory. Off a Duquesne turnover just outside of its own box, Glen Lala found Mazzotta open on the near side. Almost in the exact same spot on the field as his first goal, Mazzotta stepped into a shot and found the right side of the net this time. Meono again tried to make a diving save but was unable to come up with the stop.

NOTES
Duquesne outshot six of its first seven opponents of the 2025 season but have been on the wrong side of the ledger the last two contests, with the Hawks owning a 12-8 advantage at Sean Sweeney Field, including 5-2 on target … Both of the shots on goal came from the reserves for the Dukes, with senior Ashton Jell firing one in the first half and junior Daman Sangha collecting one in the second half … Meono finished with three saves for Duquesne in his first collegiate start … Sophomore forward Marko Rasmussen earned his first start of the 2025 campaign, with he and Meono becoming the 17th and 18th different Dukes to start a game this year … Freshman Hákon Dagur Matthíasson returned to the starting lineup against SJU, his seventh start in eight games … Duquesne hasn't been shutout in consecutive games since 2023.

UP NEXT
The Dukes return home to Rooney Field and return to non-conference action, hosting Detroit Mercy Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7:00 p.m.
