Dukes Lock Down Lipscomb

Hold Bisons to lowest point total by a DU opponent in 39 years

McCANDLESS, PA - Marcus Weathers had 13 points, a career high-tying 12 rebounds and a career-high six steals as Duquesne held Lipscomb to its lowest point total since the Bisons moved to Division I in 2004-05 in a 58-36 win at Kerr Fitness Center on the campus of La Roche University Friday night.

The Dukes, who upped their record to 3-0, held Lipscomb to 29.2 percent shooting - including 0-of-18 from 3-point - in limiting the Bisons to the lowest total by a DU opponent since a 34-33 loss to Saint Peter's on Mar. 10, 1980.

Michael Hughes posted his second-straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for DU. Baylee Steele scored 11 of his 13 points - including three dunks - in the second half for the Dukes who shot 36.7 percent.

Duquesne took a 31-22 lead on a steal and end-to-end layup by Weathers just over four minutes into the second half. Steele followed a Lipscomb timeout with back-to-back dunks, the first off a feed from Sincere Carry, to make it 35-22.

Tavian Dunn-Martin made DU's first 3-pointer - after 19 consecutive misses by nine players - to make it 44-29 with 9:16 left.

The Duquesne lead reached 26 with 3:09 remaining.

The two teams went a combined 0-of-20 from the 3-point arc in a first half that ended with Duquesne up 24-18. DU held Lipscomb scoreless for over 7:32 in building an 18-8 lead. The Dukes, who were 0-of-11 from the arc in the opening 20 minutes, got their first 16 points from the interior trio of Hughes, Weathers and Steele.

Duquesne heads to the Bahamas for the three-game Junkanoo Jam beginning on Thursday, Nov. 21. The Dukes will play Indiana State on the 21st, followed by Air Force on the 22nd and Loyola Marymount on the 24th. All three games, which will tip at 6:30 p.m. (ET), will be streamed live by FloHoops.

NOTES:
  • Duquesne is now 21-8 in nonconference play, including 19-4 at home, under Keith Dambrot.
  • This is the second-straight season the Dukes have opened 3-0.
  • Lipscomb's 36 points were the fewest by a DU opponent since a 34-33 loss to Saint Peter's in the second round of the NIT on March 10, 1980. This was the Bison's lowest point total as a Division I member (since 2004-05). It was also the first time in 474 games as a D-I school that Lipscomb failed to hit a 3-pointer.
  • The lone 3-pointer of the game (the team's were a combined 1-of-40) came from DU's Tavian Dunn-Martin at the 9:16 mark of the second half.
  • This was Weathers' (13-12) seventh career double-double and fifth in two seasons at Duquesne. The junior's six steals were three more than his previous career best and his 12 boards tied his career high.
  • This was the second-straight double-double for Hughes (10-10) who had 17 points and 10 rebounds in Tuesday's win over Lamar.
  • Sincere Carry finished with a game-high six assists with just one turnover in 31 minutes.
  • Freshman James Ellis made his Duquesne debut, finishing with two points and a rebound in three minutes.
  • This was the second of four nonconference home games for the Dukes at La Roche University's Kerr Fitness Center. The others are on Dec. 4 (VMI) and Dec. 9 (Columbia).
  • Duquesne never trailed ... DU's largest lead was 26, at 56-30, with 2:42 left.
