PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team won its fifth match in a row after a 3-1 victory over West Virginia on Tuesday night.
Liz Homan led the Dukes (16-6, 4-2 A-10) with 15 kills. Nicole Wright (10 kills, 23 digs) and Sara Scheirman (12 kills, 15 digs) recorded doubles. Sarah Svorinic had a match-high 46 assists.
With DU leading 17-16 in the first set, the Mountaineers went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-17 lead. Duquesne would only get three points the rest of the way as WVU went ahead in the match 1-0 after winning the first set 25-20.
The second set saw five ties early on. With the score deadlocked at 13-13, the Dukes took advantage of four West Virginia errors and a Svorinic kill to take an 18-13 lead. DU would finish off the set after two straight kills from Wright and one from Allison Foschia to tie the match at 1-1 after the 25-17 set win.
Duquesne maintained their energy into the third set, led by six Scheirman kills, to win 25-18 and jump ahead in the match 2-1.
After falling behind 10-8 in the fourth set, Duquesne scored seven straight points to take a 15-10 lead they would hold the rest of the match. Wright's kill at 24-14 ended the set at 25-14 and the match 3-1.
The Dukes finished with 54 kills, 78 digs eight blocks while hitting .301 for the match.
Duquesne hit the road this weekend with matches at La Salle on Friday and Temple on Saturday. Both matches start at 7:00 p.m.
Tonight was Duquesne's "Dig Pink" game. DU is helping in the fight against breast cancer with their "Dig Pink" program. Money was collected and pink t-shirts were sold to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation.
