Former Dayton coach Tom Blackburn once stated following a Duquesne NIT victory: "Red Manning gets more out of limited material than any coach I know."
As coach, Red was known for emphasis on defense. Manning once summed up his defensive philosophy this way: "The good offensive player must have exceptional ability. Ordinary players can compensate for their offensive shortcomings by working hard on defense. You can teach defense to any player if he wants to work. That's what defense is - hard work and teamwork."
