Akron, Ohio - Duquesne University's men's swimming team maintained its hold on fourth place (914 points) with two gold medals during the second day of the University of Akron's 2005 SummaCare Invitational at the Ocasek Natatorium in Ohio.
Clayton Dean (Longwood, FL / Lake Brantley) broke his own school record with a second place time of 4:07.08 in the 400 yard intermediate relay. The junior set the previous mark of 4:07.86 at this same event on December 5, 2003.
Junior Scott Darwin (Springfield, VA / West Springfield) took the gold and sophomore Jason Reinhard (Allentown, PA / Parkland) grabbed the bronze in the 100 yard backstroke with times of 51.39 and 52.77, respectively. Darwin outpaced second place finisher Dan Freeland of St. Bonaventure by 42 seconds.
And the Dukes took three of the top four spots in the 200 yard freestyle as freshman Kelly McCarthy (Avon, NJ / Christian Brothers Academy) was second (1:43.98), sophomore Ian Walsh (Slatington, PA / Parkland) took third (1:44.11) and freshman Chris Kobela (Allentown, PA / Salisbury Township) was fourth (1:44.38).
Duquesne's other gold medal was won by the relay team of Reinhard, senior John Holleran (Allison Park, PA/North Allegheny), junior Ed Wicker (Newberry, SC / Newberry ) and Darwin via a time of 1:34.70 in the 200 yard medley relay. Clarion held a 0.32 second advantage going into the race's final leg that Darwin erased, beating CU's Kevin McCracken by 0.37 seconds.
St. Bonaventure continues to lead the six-team competition with 1,186.5 points. Duquesne does not compete in diving events.
The final day of the 2005 SummaCare Invitational begins Sunday with the preliminary rounds beginning at 9 a.m. The event's last day of finals start at 4 p.m.
