PITTSBURGH - An appearance in the season-opening NABC Classic at Albuquerque as well as games vs. 2004 NCAA Tournament participants Boston College and Pittsburgh highlight the 13-game Duquesne University men's basketball non-conference schedule released today. The Dukes open the season as part of the four-team exempt NABC Classic at the University of New Mexico on Nov. 12-14. DU faces Santa Clara followed by North Carolina A&T and host New Mexico on consecutive nights in the round-robin formatted event. Duquesne returns to Pittsburgh to start the home season on Saturday, November 20 vs. Lafayette, prior to hosting the Big East's West Virginia Mountaineers on Nov. 24. DU closes out the month of November at 2004 NIT participant George Mason on the 27th. On December 1, the Dukes host Akron before facing their second Big East opponent in cross-town rival Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center on Saturday, December 4. Duquesne then hosts Maryland-Baltimore County on the 11th prior to beginning a stretch of three road games over a 19-day Christmas holiday span. The Dukes head to Athens, Ohio to face Ohio University on December 18 prior to heading to Boston to take on a Boston College team that returns four starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team on the 22nd. Duquesne makes its first trip to Robert Morris in a decade (last appearance Dec. 22, 1994) on December 29, to take on the Colonials in the Dukes' final non-conference road game. DU completes the non-conference schedule with a New Year's Eve afternoon game versus Youngstown State at the Palumbo Center. Duquesne's 13 non-conference opponents averaged 15 wins last season, with four of the 13 making post-season appearances: Pittsburgh (31-5) advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, while Boston College (24-10) made it to the second round of the NCAAs. George Mason (21-9) and West Virginia (15-13) both reached the second round of the NIT. Of the 13 non-conference games, five will be at home, six on the road and two at neutral sites.
