Three Duquesne University men's soccer players were named to the Verizon Academic All-District II Team as voted on by the district's sports information directors. Junior defenseman Jason Kutney (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Borough), senior goalkeeper Terry McNelis (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp.) and senior defenseman Christian Reinecker (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp.) were honored.
McNelis, who was named a Verizon First Team All-American last year, is a three-time recipient of the district award. The 2001 Atlantic 10 Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year boasts a 3.60 cumulative grade point average in physical therapy. On the field, he is the Duquesne record-holder in three of the five single-season records as well as all five career standards. This year he is tied for the conference lead in shutouts with five and is second in the A-10 in goals against average at 1.08.
Kutney and Reinecker receive their laurels on their first appearance on the ballot. Both players help lead a defense that has allowed just 1.07 goals per game and has posted six shutouts. Kutney has a goal and three assists for five points on the season and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Colgate Invitational while Reinecker, a transfer from Seton hall last season, has one assist on the year.
The Dukes, who have clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship, host St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 pm in their regular season finale.
