Men's Tennis Drops a Pair in South Bend

South Bend, Ind. – The Duquesne University men's tennis team opened its 2026 season on Monday, dropping a pair of matches in South Bend. The Dukes fell to the host Notre Dame, 6-1 before dropping a 5-0 match to Western Michigan.

MATCH AT NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame captured the doubles point after taking victories at the second and third slots. Sophomores Enrique Lana and Aril Kayra Tuna fell to Noah Becker and Sebastian Dominko, 6-0 before classmates Uvan Patel and Tancredi Alfano fell 6-1 to Nolan Balthazor and Nicholas Patrick.

During singles play, the Fighting Irish took five of six matches to capture the victory. At the top spot, Lana dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Perry Gregg before Lai fell to Giuseppe Cerasuolo, 6-3, 6-1. At third singles, Tuna fell to Kyran Magimay 6-2, 6-3 while Vogelaar lost to Patrick, 7-5, 6-2. In the final two spots, Tancredi was defeated by Balthazor, 6-1, 6-1 at the fifth slot before sophomore Teo Papadopoulos on by defeat at the final spot.

MATCH VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN
Against the Broncos, Western Michigan captured all three doubles matches to secure the early point. At the number one spot, Lai and Tancredi dropped a 6-4 decision to Oscar Corwin and Alex Antonopoulos before Tuna and Lana lost 6-4 to Jack Davison and Ashton Adesoro at the second slot. At third doubles, Patel and senior Pierce Manning was defeated by Drew Evans and Jonas Keck, 6-0.

Western Michigan continued its momentum during singles play, capturing four wins to take the victory. Lana fell to Adesoro 6-2, 6-4 at the number one spot while Tancredi was defeated by Matej Kajzer, 7-5, 6-1 at the four spot. Papadopoulos dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to Davison in the fifth slot before senior Chris Cianciotti was swept by Dimitri Moriarty, 6-0, 6-1.
