GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Duquesne's women's basketball team's eight game winning streak ended on Wednesday night after a 62-49 loss to the University of Florida in the championship game of the Gator Holiday Classic.
Orsi Szecsi, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, had a team-high 15 points for the Dukes who fall to 12-2. Wumi Agunbiade had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Jordan Jones scored a game-high 18 points for UF who improved to 8-3.
The Duquesne defense held Florida to just one field goal in its first 13 attempts as Szecsi's layup at 12:16 made the score 12-6, giving the Dukes its largest lead of the game. UF would counter with an 11-3 run to take its first lead of the game 17-15 at the 4:19 mark.
With 48 seconds left and the score tied at 19-19, Jones hit a 3-pointer from the right side to put the Gators up by three points. Szecsi would follow with a layup with 26 second seconds left to close out the first half scoring with the Dukes trailing by one point going into halftime, 22-21.
Florida came out of the gates in the second half by scoring 11 straight points to take a 33-21 lead with 16:23 remaining. Duquesne would come back with a 15-6 run to cut the deficit to three points midway through the half at 39-36.
However, UF would score the seven points to take a 10 point lead at 46-36 with 8:16 left. With 4:11 left, Agunbiade's jumper would cut the lead to five points at 50-45, but the Dukes would only get two more field goals down the stretch.
The Dukes' next game is Dec. 28 in the City Game against the University of Pittsburgh. The game will be at the Petersen Events Center and will tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
