SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Duquesne lacrosse team put up a hard fought game against #8 Notre Dame, but the Fighting Irish held off a late run by the Dukes to take a 15-10 victory on Saturday evening.
DU falls to 0-3 on the season.
Katie Rekart totaled four points on three goals and an assist, and Meghan Frederick recorded three goals on the evening. Cailin Colegrove scored twice for the Dukes, while Kat McNish scored one goal and an assist. Casey Denk also scored for the Dukes.
UND jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first half. Duquesne would respond with goals from Rekart, Colegrove and a pair by Frederick to tie the contest at 5-5 midway through the half.
However, Notre Dame would score six of the next seven goals to take an 11-6 lead into halftime.
The Irish would build its lead to 13-6 with 26:13 remaining in the contest after a pair of goals from Kailene Abt.
The Dukes would make a comeback on goals by McNish, Denk and Rekart to cut the deficit to 13-9 at with 15:14 left.
After back-to-back Notre Dame goals, a Colegrove goal would make the score 15-10 at the 12:47 mark.
The game developed into a defensive battle, with neither team scoring the rest of the way.
Coming off the Denver game allowing 49 shots, Notre Dame fired 44 shots at keeper Sara Beckstead. She made a career-best 19 saves.
The Dukes open up its home schedule on Friday against Ohio State. The match starts at Rooney Field at 4:00 p.m.
