Dukes Open Season With Victory

Duquesne opened its 2002 season with a 3-2 victory over Liberty in the nightcap of the Duquesne Invitational paced by sophomore Ashley Macko with a match-best 17 kills. Junior Sarah Morrow added 11 kills while sophomore Erin Trageser notched 10 kills. Morrow led the match with nine blocks and paced the Dukes with 10 digs. Setter Sarah Brown posted 48 assists. Liberty, which advanced to the 2001 NCAA tournament, was led by Jennifer Belk and Tatiana Tkachuk with 13 kills each.

The Dukes won game one 30-23 before the Flames took game two 30-24. Duquesne captured gamed three 30-25 and Liberty took the fourth game 30-22 to send the game into the fifth and deciding match. The Dukes grabbed a 15-7 decision for the win.

The first match saw West Virginia sweep Western Illinois 3-0 behind an 18-kill effort from Stephanie Zolna. Dimitra Havriluk led the team with 14 digs while adding 15 kills. Christy Ottmers led Western Illinois and the match with 17 digs.

Day two's action begins at 11:00 on Saturday with Liberty vs. West Virginia.
