Ryan Nussbaum, DO, is a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) doctor specializing in sports medicine. He is an assistant professor and program director for the sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Department of PM&R. Dr. Nussbaum received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa., and completed an internship at Allegheny Health Network.

Nussbaum completed his residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill., followed by a sports medicine fellowship at UPMC. Nussbaum, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is passionate about caring for his community and has been a team physician for Duquesne University since 2023 and Penn Hills High School since 2022. 

Nussbaum uses a comprehensive and patient-centered approach to improve functions for the student-athlete. He prioritizes educating and empowering his student-athletes so they can make the best decision for their health. Nussbaum’s clinical interests include sports-related and musculoskeletal injuries of all ages, athletes with disabilities, overhead athletes, diagnostic ultrasound, advanced interventional ultrasound procedures, nerve conduction studies, and orthobiologics. 
From a research perspective, Nussbaum is interested in musculoskeletal ultrasound medical education, injury surveillance/prevention for athletes, equity for athletes with disabilities, and overhead athletes.
