Randy Roth, whose association with head coach Danny Nee dates back to 1984, brings over 20 years of college coaching experience to the Dukes' bench.
The 45-year-old Roth has been part of Nee's staff for each of the last eight seasons, including three at Nebraska (1997-00) and one at Robert Morris (2000-01). Roth's ties to Nee were established in 1984, when he served as a graduate assistant under Nee at Ohio University.
During his coaching career, Roth has been part of six teams that have advanced to postseason play. Roth, who accompanied Nebraska to the 1998 NCAA Tournament and also made an NCAA tourney trip with Ohio in 1985, helped recruit several of the players who propelled Ohio State to the 1999 Final Four. Among the players he helped recruit or coach at OSU are 1998 Big 10 Freshman of the Year Michael Redd and Big 10 all-time blocked shot leader Ken Johnson.
In addition to his NCAA appearances, Roth was part of National Invitation Tournament teams at four different schools: Nebraska (1999), Ohio State (1993), Butler (1991) and Ohio (1986).
Prior to his three-year stint at Nebraska, Roth served as an assistant under Randy Ayers at Ohio State for five seasons. Roth helped the Buckeyes land some of the nation's top talent, including a 1995 recruiting class that ranked among the top 10 in the nation. In all, Roth has coached eight players who went on to play in the NBA.
Before joining Ayers' staff, Roth spent two years at Butler University and one season at Akron.
Roth served in his graduate assistant role for Danny Nee's final two seasons at Ohio, before being retained by Nee's successor Billy Hahn. Roth was a full-time assistant on Hahn's staff for three seasons following Nee's departure for Nebraska.
The Ohio native began his coaching career at Logan (Ohio) High School during the 1982-83 season. He spent one season as an assistant at Eastern Arizona Junior College, where he helped the Gila Monsters to a NJCAA tournament finals appearance in 1984.
Roth earned his bachelor's degree in education from Ohio University in 1983 and his master's in higher education from Ohio in 1987. Randy and his wife, Jeanine, have two children: son Connor (11) and daughter Casey (8). The Roths reside in Moon Township.
