Both Duquesne University basketball teams are in action Saturday as the men will take on host Florida International University for the title of the FIU / Hampton Inn New Year's Classic at Golden Panther Arena in Miami, FL at 8 pm. DU topped St. Francis (NY) 67-57 Friday to move into the championship game. Florida International (5-6) routed Radford 81-46 in the other first round contest.
The women's squad's first action following the Christmas break is at 1 p.m. this afternoon. The Dukes have made their way to Blacksburg, VA and have an opening round matchup with 5-6 Loyola (MD) in the Virginia Tech Lady Luck Classic at the Hokies' Cassell Coliseum. The Dukes will face either Va. Tech (6-2) or Tennessee-Martin (3-6) on Sunday.
In the first round action yesterday at FIU, the Dukes were led to the win by junior Elijah Palmer with 18 points and 10 rebounds along with senior Kevin Forney with 15 points and freshman Bryant McAllister with 14, including 11 in the second half. FIU meanwhile was paced by Al Harris with a season-high 17 points. Junior Matias and Fab Fisher each scored 11 and Rodrigo Viegas chipped in 10.
