Oct. 16, 2002

Three Duquesne student-athletes received weekly honors from their respective conferences for their performances in this past weekend's competition. Freshman volleyball player Stephanie Hopkins, junior tennis player Micael Lopez-Acevedo and senior football player Mitchell Zobb were all honored.

Hopkins (right), was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after helping lead the Dukes to a 3-1 win over visiting George Washington this past week. She tied her career-best with 16 digs and three blocks, which included her first solo block. Hopkins boasted a .360 hitting percentage with just four errors and tied the team lead with 13 kills. She averaged 4.3 kills and 5.3 digs per game.

Lopez-Acevedo (left) was named the A-10 Player of the Week after going 3-0 in singles action at the Dayton Invitational to capture the Flight A title. He defeated Dayton's D.J. Gebhart, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, Wright State's Brian Butt, 6-0, 6-0 and Dayton's Rob Altenau, 6-4, 6-1.

Zobb (right) was tabbed the MAAC Football League's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Duquesne's 14-3 win at Saint Peter's on Saturday. He tied for the team lead with nine tackles (six solo) and intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards in leading the Dukes to the victory. Duquesne's defense, currently ranked No. 1 nationally in NCAA Division I-AA, limited the Peacocks to 128 total yards, including minus four yards passing.

So far this season, 15 of Duquesne's fall sport student-athletes have received 16 weekly conference awards: football (6), men's tennis (3), men's cross-country (2), volleyball (2), men's soccer (1), women's soccer (1), and women's tennis (1). Note: cross-country runner Ryan Bender has been honored twice by the Atlantic 10.
