Track & Field Academic All-Conference Honors Announced

Four Duquesne student-athletes have been named to the 2003 Atlantic 10 Track & Field Academic All-Conference Team as announced today by the league office. Junior Shea McMillan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and sophomore Alison Buchanan (Ravenna, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) were chosen to the women's team while junior Pat McGuire (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore Ryan Bender (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) were named to the men's squad.

McMillan earns her fourth academic all-conference accolade after being named to the 2002 indoor team and the 2001-02 indoor and outdoor Academic All-Conference squads. This past outdoor season, she took bronze in the triple jump, eighth as a member of the 4 x 100 relay and ninth in the long jump at the A-10 championship. McMillan helped set a new 4 x 100 Duquesne record (49.55) at Akron and a new indoor stands in the 60 meter with her time of 8.03 at the WVU Holiday Classic. A 2001-02 Verizon XC/Track & Field District II selection, she boasts a 3.78 GPA in finance.

Buchanan captured bronze as a member of the 4 x 800 relay and took sixth in the 800 meter at this year's A-10 outdoor championship. She was a member of the 4 x 800 relay, which ran an ECAC qualifying mark of 9:11.96 at the Penn Relays. Buchanan also helped set two new Duquesne relay records as a member of the 4 x 800 and Distance Medley Relay. A physical therapy major, she has a 3.78 GPA.

McGuire set a new Duquesne record and qualified for the IC4A championship with his time of 9:13.82 in the 3,000m steeplechase at this year's A-10 meet. He also helped establish a new school mark as a member of the 4 x 1500 relay and was one of the Dukes top competitors during the cross country season. McGuire has a 3.62 GPA in secondary education/math and is a member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics Honor Roll and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Bender placed fifth in the 5,000 meter at the Atlantic 10 outdoor championships, an event he holds the Duquesne record in. He was a two-time A-10 Performer of the Week and was 10th overall at the A-10 cross country championship. Bender was tabbed a cross country Academic All-Conference selection and is a member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics Honor Roll and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. He boasts a 3.98 GPA in pharmacy.
