Dukes Fall to La Salle at A-10 Championship

Clark III scores a career-high 27 in defeat

BROOKLYN, NY - Jhamir Brickus and Khalil Brantley combined for 45 points to lead No. 11 seed La Salle (14-18) to an 81-70 win over sixth-seeded Duquesne (20-12) in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Jimmy Clark III scored a career-high 27 points in defeat for the Dukes.

Joe Reece and Dae Dae Grant had 13 each and Tevin Brewer added 12 for the Dukes, who were outscored 54-37 in the second half.

There were six ties and three lead changes before Duquesne went on an 11-0 run - that ended with a Clark III dunk and 3-pointer - to take a 28-22 lead.

The Dukes, who got all 13 points from Grant in the opening 20 minutes, led 33-27 at the half.

La Salle tied it at 33-33 before Clark III scored eight of DU's next 11 - including a pair of 3-pointers, to help the Dukes regain a 44-36 lead.

Duquesne, which opened the half 7-of-22, fell behind 59-51 on a Fousseyni Drame layup with 7:09 left.

Brantley and Brickus combined for 21 of La Salle's first 32 points of the second half.

Duquesne went scoreless for over four minutes as La Salle built is lead to 63-53.

The Dukes would get no closer than eight the rest of the way, as La Salle hit 19-of-23 free throws in the second half.

The Explorers outshot the Dukes 51 percent to 35 percent, including 64 percent to 31 percent in the second half.

NOTES
  • Clark III's 27 points were one more than his previous career-best of 26 scored earlier this season vs. VCU. Clark III, who went 5-of-8 from the arc, scored 22 in the second half.  
  • La Salle outscored Duquesne 36-20 in the paint.
  • The Dukes had a season-low five bench points. DU's previous low was 10 in the 66-55 win over DePaul on Dec. 14.
  • Duquesne's largest lead was eight, at 41-33, with 15:49 left ... La Salle's largest lead was 13, the last of which came at 78-65, with 0:30 left  ... there were 10 ties and seven lead changes in the game ... La Salle took the lead for good on a Jhamir Brickus layup that made that made it 50-49 with 10:45 left ... La Salle led for 20:42 ... Duquesne led for 14:57.
