Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University swimming & diving team opened its 2023-24 campaign Friday at the Richmond Duals in Hampton, Va., falling to George Mason, 152-147, at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex.
Leading the way for the Dukes Friday was sophomore
Sydney Severini, who finished first in three races, including the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke as well as the 200-yard IM. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Severini closed with a time of 1:05.74, outpacing Ainsley Toews of George Mason, who finished at 1:08.96.
Toews (2:30.20) also finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke to Severini, who hit the wall at 2:22.44, almost eight seconds better than the George Mason sophomore. In the 200-yard IM, Severini outlasted Anka Whelan of the Patriots by recording a time of 2:09.60. Whelan finished at 2:11.01.
Also claiming multiple victories Friday for Duquesne was sophomore
Ashley Felitsky in the dives. She finished with a score of 230.20 in the one-meter as well compiling 234.20 in the three-meter.
In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman
Lexi Sundgren earned gold in her NCAA Division I debut, recording a time of 1:54.54 to outlast junior
Orla Egan (1:55.36). Egan finished first in the 500-yard freestyle thanks to a touch at 5:09.16, a race that saw Sundgren garner second at 5:14.21.
Junior
Haley Scholer also claimed victory in her first meet of the 2023-24 season Friday, closing at 52.62 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Scholer also swam the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay for the Dukes that claimed second with a time of 3:33.62. She was joined on the squad by Sundgren, Egan and senior
Molly Brennan.
Duquesne continues the Richmond Duals Saturday, Oct. 14, by taking on Davidson.
