Dukes Smother Saint Joseph's

Hold Hawks to season lows in points and field goal percentage in 67-50 win

McCANDLESS, PA. - Marcus Weathers scored a season-high 24 points and Michael Hughes added 12 to lead Duquesne to a smothering 67-50 win over Saint Joseph's at Kerr Fitness Center on the campus of La Roche University.

The win was the third in four games for the Dukes, who evened their record at 6-6 overall and 5-5 in the Atlantic 10. The loss was the sixth in a row for the Hawks who dropped to 1-14 overall and 0-9 in the A-10.

The DU defense was the difference as the Dukes held the Hawks to season lows in both points (50) and shooting percentage (.283).

Duquesne, which never trailed, held Saint Joseph's scoreless for over six minutes in building a 25-7 lead.

Toby Okani was fouled on a dunk and converted the three-point play to make it 32-12 at the 4:39 mark and Weathers, who had 12 in the opening 20 minutes, converted a pair of free throws to up the lead to 25 with just over one minute left.

The Dukes held SJU to six field goals - and outscored the Hawks 13-0 off turnovers - in building their 40-17 halftime lead.

Duquesne got back-to-back dunks from Weathers and Hughes push the lead back to 25, before Saint Joseph's found its range and cut the lead to 50-33 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Dahmir Bishop and Taylor Funk with just over 14 minutes left.

DU answered with a pair of Weathers free throws and a 3-pointer from Tyson Acuff to push the lead back over 20.

SJU, which hit five of its seven 3-pointers in the second half made it 61-45 on a three before Weathers scored on a drive and found Hughes for a dunk.

DU, which finished with nine blocked shots, never saw its lead dip below 16 in the second half.

Duquesne returns to campus for its first true home game in 22 months when it hosts Dayton on Tuesday, Feb. 2 in the first game at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The game, set for a 9:00 p.m. start, will air on ESPNU.
