PITTSBURGH - Student-athletes Devon Tabata, Arielle Love and Rich Robbie were named Student-Athletes of the Year at Duquesne's annual Senior Luncheon held today in the ballroom of the Power Center.
Tabata, a goalkeeper for the soccer team and Love, a volleyball outside hitter, shared the female honor, while Robbie, a tennis player, was named the male winner.
A total of seven student-athletes were nominated for the award by their coaches. Criteria for S-A of the Year include a GPA of 3.0 or above, participation with distinction in their sport and a demonstrated commitment to service. Additional nominees included Amanda Kidder (lacrosse), Anna Simone (track), Nick DiSomma (soccer) and Evan Gomez (cross country/track).
Tabata, who also received a special Leadership Award at the banquet, has a 3.77 GPA as a finance major. A fixture on the Dean's List, Director of Athletics' Honor Roll, and Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, she served as an Atlantic 10 SAAC representative, Division I SAAC Member and Vice Chair and student-athlete member of the NCAA Division I Council. Tabata, who ranks second in program history in a number of statistical categories, has already secured employment with Deloitte upon graduation.
Love graduated cum laude last August with a BS in business administration and is currently pursuing her MBA in sustainability. She, like Tabata, is a multiple member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics Honor Roll and Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. A First Team All-Atlantic 10 performer as a sophomore, junior and senior, Love was named All-AVCA Division I Midwest All-Region this past season. A member of DU's 2013 NCAA Championship qualifying team, Love earned AVCA Division I National Player of the Week honors on her way to being named 2014 AVCA Division I Honorable Mention All-America.
Robbie, who has a 3.44 GPA as a finance major, was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 player last season with this year's awards yet to be announced. The holder of Top 10 positions in numerous program categories, Robbie has been a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member for four years and has assisted DU's annual One World Running shoe drive, the UPMC Christmas Toy Drive and athletic department programming.
The Bluff Cup, which is awarded to the athletic team which demonstrates outstanding service, support and participation in our surrounding communities, was presented to the women's soccer team.
Women's soccer, which was influential and/or present for all initiatives and SAAC meetings, participated in the Color Run, provided financial advice/education to the underprivileged, donated to the Cameroon Football Development program and brought attention to and raised funds for a peer. In addition, they volunteered weekly with a local school closely affiliated with the Best Buddies program.
