Bethlehem, Pa. - Duquesne University's women's cross country team, which had been 15th the last two years, finished 11th in the 29-team NCAA Division I Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Regional meet held Saturday at Lehigh's Goodman Campus Cross County Course.
Sophomore Samantha Howard paced the Dukes with a time of 21:29.4, finishing 26th in the 182-runner race. Senior Brianne Scott's time of 22:13.2 was good for 58th. Senior Elizabeth Graham and sophomore Amy Ruffolo crossed the wire within 0.6 seconds of each other, good for 74th and 76th, respectively. Senior Tara Gerlach rounded out Duquesne's top five; her time of 22:46.6 was 90th putting all five Dukes in the top half of the competition.
Also competing for Duquesne were senior Rebecca Stearns (121) and sophomore Jenna Daggett (145)
The top two teams qualify for the NCAA Championships, plus the top four individuals who are not members of the qualifying teams.
Princeton placed first led by Cack Ferrell who took the individual crown in 19:58.3. Villanova earned the second team qualification spot. Individual qualifiers were Keira Carlstrom of American, Rachel Papin of La Salle, Maggie Infeld of Georgetown and Jen Schappert of the host Mountain Hawks.
The Dukes complete the 2005 season at the ECAC championship on Saturday, November 19 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York.
