A-10 Announces Commissioner's Honor Roll

Jan. 27, 2005

Duquesne University placed a league high 149 student-athletes on the Fall 2004 Semester Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, which was released Wednesday by league commissioner Linda Bruno. DU's total ranks first among league members and ups DU's all-time number of student-athletes honored to a league-high 1,803.

"It is an honor to recognize these student-athletes who truly exemplify what the college experience is all about," says Bruno. "Their commitment to excellence on and off the playing field is inspiring and should serve as an example to all."

In the Fall of 2004, the Presidents Council of the Atlantic 10 Conference changed the parameters of the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Now, the Honor Roll will be announced at the end of each semester and will recognize all student-athletes who register a grade point average of 3.5 or better for that semester. Previously, one honor roll, encompassing the entire academic year, was announced, consisting of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or better. In all, a total of 894 student-athletes from the 12 member schools were honored in Fall 2004.

"The Presidents Council felt that by changing the parameters of the Commissioner's Honor Roll that it would be more consistent with what our institutions do on their own campuses regarding their Dean's Lists," explains Bruno. "By citing grade point averages for just the most recently-completed semester, it allows student-athletes a greater chance of being honored. Now, one or two semesters won't influence whether or not you earn Commissioner's Honor Roll status.

"I am pleased that our presidents took such an active role in this important honor."

Duquesne University competes in 18 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10 conference including eight on the men's side (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis and outdoor track & field) and 10 on the women's side (basketball, cross country, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball).

Since the inception of the Commissioner's Honor Roll in 1996, Duquesne has placed a league-high 1,803 student-athletes on the list: 124 in 1996, 154 in 1997, 164 in 1998, 172 in 1999, 185 in 2000, 203 in 2001, 198 in 2002, 211 in 2003, 243 in 2004 and 149 this past semester.
