Dukes Zapped by Zips, 77-65

Duquesne missed 26 of its first 30 shots in the second half and watched a four-point halftime lead turn into a 14-point deficit in a 77-65 loss to Akron at the Palumbo Center. The Zips, who went 14-of-26 from the 3-point arc, outscored the Dukes 37-21 in the second half.

Bubba Walther, who went 5-of-9 from the arc, led Akron with 15 points. Jeremiah Wood added 11. Bryant McAllister scored a game-high 21 for Duquesne. DeVario Hudson added 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.

Duquesne jumped out to a 12-2 lead before turning it over on six-straight possessions as Akron went on a 12-0 run to take a 14-12 lead on a Walther 3-pointer. The lead changed hands five more times before Akron went up four with just over two minutes left. Duquesne, which shot 63 percent in the first half, closed with an 8-0 run with McAllister hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 44-40.

Akron took a 52-50 lead on a Rob Preston 3-pointer with 12:19 left and never relinquished the lead as the Dukes scored just six points in first 11:38 of the half. The Akron lead reached 15 before DU cut it to 12 for the final margin. Akron finished the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field while the Dukes, who went 7-of-30 in the second half, shot 43.3 percent. The Dukes outrebounded the Zips 38-32.
