A Closer Look at the 2016-17 Non-Conference Opponents
PITTSBURGH -- Games against Power 5 conference members Kentucky, Pitt and Penn State highlight the 13-game Duquesne men's basketball non-conference schedule released today.
The Dukes, who went 10-3 in regular season non-conference games last year - including 7-0 at home, will play at the Palumbo Center nine times prior to the start of the Atlantic 10 season.
Duquesne will hit the ground running with six games, including two on the road, in a span of 13 days to open the season. In all, the Dukes will play a school-record eight games in the month of November.
DU tips off its 101st season at home against Loyola on Friday, Nov. 11, before heading to State College for its 48th all-time meeting with Penn State on Nov. 13. It is the seventh consecutive season that the Dukes will face the Big Ten's Nittany Lions.
Saint Francis U visits the Palumbo Center on Nov. 16, before Duquesne begins play in the Bluegrass Showcase with a home game versus Canisius on Nov. 18. The Dukes will make the quick trip to Lexington for their second all-time meeting with Showcase host Kentucky on Nov. 20 (the first game vs. UK was in December of 1982). It will be DU's first game against a Southeastern Conference opponent since a trip to Gainesville to face Florida in December of 1997.
Duquesne then returns home to face 2015-16 20-game winner UT Martin (Nov. 23) and Cleveland State (Nov. 27) to conclude the four-game Showcase.
DU closes out the month at home against UMBC on Nov. 30.
The Dukes open December with the 85th City Game vs. Pitt at CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 2 and close out the non-conference schedule with home games against Central Connecticut State (Dec. 10), Jackson State (Dec. 19) and Colgate (Dec. 22). Jackson State, like UT Martin, won 20 games in advancing to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) last season.
The date for an additional game, at Robert Morris, is to be announced.
The complete 2016-17 Atlantic 10 schedule will be released at a later date.
Fifth-year head coach Jim Ferry returns two starters from last year's 17-17 CBI second round team.
Fans can get their first glimpse of the 2016-17 squad when the Dukes host Mansfield in an exhibition game on Nov. 5.

2016-17 SCHEDULE QUICK NOTES
Duquesne will hit the ground running with a school-record eight games in the month of November. The previous record for November games was seven set in 2011-12. Duquesne will open the season with six games - including two on the road - in 13 days.
Four of DU's 13 non-conference opponents won 20 games and made postseason appearances last season: Kentucky (27-7, NCAA), Pitt (21-12, NCAA), Jackson State (20-16, CIT) and UT Martin (20-15, CIT).
Central Connecticut State, Jackson State and UT Martin are all first-time opponents.
DU's Nov. 20 game at Kentucky will be its first against an SEC opponent in 19 years.
Duquesne went 10-3 in regular season non-conference games last season, including a 7-0 mark at home. It was the first time a DU team went undefeated in regular season, non-conference home games since 1995-96.
DU will play a total of nine non-conference games at home - all at A.J. Palumbo Center.
