Duquesne's swimming team opened the four-day Atlantic 10 Championship Wednesday evening with a school record setting performance in the 200 yard medley relay.
The quartet of sophomore Abby Watson, sophomore Kayla Owens, freshman Kristen McKnight and sophomore Gabrielle Sibilia finished second in the 11-school field with a school record time of 1:41.30 to earn 34 team points.
The second and final event of the short evening was the 800 freestyle relay. Senior Samantha Ray, sophomore Lexi Santer, senior Taylor Kane and Sibilia however suffered a DQ, preventing them from earning additional team points.
The Dukes are currently in ninth place with three full days of action remaining.
"Despite the DQ we are swimming lights-out," said head coach David Sheets. "This team does not know the word quit. We have three days of swimming left and will get ourselves back in the meet one race and one event at a time."
Day two action on Thursday opens at 10:00 am with preliminary races in the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free. The top 16 finishers will compete in the evening finals beginning at 6:30 pm with the evening closing with the 200 free relay.
